Ok, everyone knows that farmer’s markets are super great things. Here in LA I usually go to smaller, neighborhood based farmer’s markets like the one in Larchmont, but on Sunday I went to the MASSIVE Hollywood one! I had forgotten how great it is especially at this time of year.
I scored the best apricots in the place and they are at their peak! Soooo sweet, perfect and simply amazing just by themselves. It’s like summer exploding in your mouth.
They are going to be awesome in a tart, a sorbet and on my morning granola! The apricot season is incredibly short so run out and get what you can before it’s all over.
Every year at this time my mom would make home-made apricot leather. It’s a great way to preserve ‘cots.
Take a 6 of the ripest apricots, halve and remove the pits, toss in a blender with 1/2 cup of sugar, one teaspoon lemon juice and puree the heck out of it.
Mom would spead out some plastic wrap in the sun on a table in the back yard, spread the puree out in an even coat and let it sit until it was dry to the touch and only slightly tacky.
I do it by spreading evenly on a lighly oiled baking sheet and drying in a 200 degree oven for about an hour.
Carefully peel off the completely cooled leather from the baking sheet and lay on a piece of waxed paper or plastic wrap. Roll up, cut in to 2” lengths and store in a zip lock. Delicious!
